Moderator Training?
If any League members would like to update their debate moderator skills, please contact the Hamden office at lwvct@lwvct.org. If there’s enough interest, we’ll organize a moderators’ workshop in early September.
Money Matters Tax Returns
Please make sure that you have filed your League’s 990-N form on line. They’re due between July 1 and November 15. If you have any questions, call the LWVCT office in Hamden (203-288-7996) or check the IRS website, www.irs.gov.
A Way to Get More Donations
To make it easier for local Leagues to get contributions, the LWVUS makes its education fund available to all Leagues through their Education Fund (LWVEF). To take advantage of this service, your League will have to contact the LWVUS to establish an account (for the proper procedure, see our Local League Reference Book called “Finances”), but once you have done that, all you have to do is tell potential donors to make their checks out to LWVEF and hand or mail them to you. Your treasurer can then bundle them together and forward them to the LWVUS with one of their standard deposit slips (again, see “Finances” for a copy).
You can use your LWVEF funds for voter service, voter education, and/or up to half of your annual LWVUS PMP. And your donors can write the whole thing off.
Voter Service “Stop, Look & Listen” revisited Pat Donovan: pad44@sbcglobal.net, 860-567-5689
The League has been offered an opportunity to partner with the Secretary of the State in an outreach program designed to familiarize voters with the optical scan voting Machines.
These demonstrations are offered in both English and Spanish and can be held during the day or evening. The Leagues will pick time place and target audience (seniors, students, service organizations, unions, Latinos) and provide PR. The SOTS’s office will provide speaker, scanner, handouts and some publicity. There is no minimum attendance size.
Lucian Pawlak, from the Secretary of State’s office, will schedule as many dates as possible (at least one in each of the state’s congressional districts). He will contact local registrars encouraging them to participate. Depending upon local cooperation more sessions could be scheduled. Dates are available during August and September.
It is important that we pick our dates and get on the calendar as soon as possible. Please let me know if you wish to participate.
Voter Registration A reminder: Now would be a good time to contact your PTA if you would like to register new voters or voters with changed addresses at back-to-school nights, which many towns schedule in early September.
