THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS

THE MOST RESPECTED CITIZEN ACTION ORGANIZATION IN AMERICA

WHO WE ARE

A grassroots organization in more than a thousand communities, in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. We invite all men and women to join us.

Nonpartisan. We neither support nor oppose political parties or candidates.

Advocates. We work to influence public policy through education and advocacy. We act only after study and member agreement to achieve solutions in the public interest on key community issues at all governmental levels.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. It is the only thing that ever has."

Margaret Mead

Anthropologist

WHAT WE DO

Promote an open governmental system that is representative, accountable and responsive.

Build citizen participation in the democratic process by providing nonpartisan information on issues and candidates through debates, forums, publications and community dialogues.

Research critical and sometimes controversial public issues of concern to our members, such as campaign finance, welfare reform, education and the environment.

Lobby government officials at all levels in support of League positions on issues arrived at by study and consensus of members.

"Every major change in recent American history has resulted from citizen action. From the civil rights and the women's movement to environmental issues, it has been citizens in the lead."

Nancy Neuman

LWVUS President, 1986-90

FOR THE COMMUNITY

Provide  a wide range of nonpartisan information services: citizen education, voter registration, workshops and conferences.

Make complex and controversial issues clearer to the average citizen in an unbiased way.

Sponsor and staff community discussions on topics such as education, charter revision, land use and many other local issues.

Train community leaders and activists at home and abroad.

AND FOR YOU

Become an informed member of your community and have a say in the laws you live by.

Receive League publications from our local, state and national offices.

Work with others who share your interest in effective government and who want to make a difference. You will find friends and social activities in the League.

Be as involved and active in League activities as you want -- there is no required time commitment.

"It is my sincere hope that all citizens of Connecticut will recognize the priceless benefits of the League so that membership will increase and the League will continue to extend its magnificent record of service."
