Action Alert: Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative [RGGI] Regulations Must Be Approved
On June 24th, the Regulations Review Committee will meet in Room 1E of the LOB to take action on a variety of proposed state regulations, including the DEP’s proposed Control of Carbon Dioxide Emissions from power plants. These regulations are a result of the Governor’s historic agreement with other northeastern states in December 2005 to reduce emissions from power plants. Plants will have to purchase emission credits that are paid into the Energy Efficiency Fund and the Clean Energy Fund to benefit consumers with energy efficiency and clean energy programs. The regulations were approved by the Attorney General on May 1st and need final approval by the committee before they can go into effect.
Unlike other legislative committees, Regulations Review meets year round and has equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans. Please review the committee list below to see if any of the 14 members are your Senator or Representative. Please urge them to approve the regulations that reduce global warming where it matters most.
Sample phone or e-mail message: My name is _____________ and I am a LWV member from (town). I am calling/contacting you today to urge adoption of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative regulations without delay. These regulations are an important step in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and they will help us meet the mandatory statewide limits for reducing greenhouse emissions that are mandated by HB 5600 which passed in the final week of the session.
I strongly support the requirement that power plants pay for the pollution they produce and that the resulting revenue be used to benefit energy efficiency and clean energy programs for consumers. Please let me know how you plan to vote on these regulations on June 24th.Thank you for your time.
Note: *Paul Doyle was absent for the vote on HB 5600. **T.R. Rowe and William Hamzy voted against HB 5600. All other committee members voted in support of HB 5600.
